University of Redlands men’s basketball team outlasts Claremont-Mudd Scripps in overtime – Press Enterprise
REDLANDS — Wednesday was the first of possibly three matchups between the University of Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball teams and it did not disappoint.
Joey Kennedy missed two free throws with 0.4 seconds left in overtime and Redlands held off CMS 79-78 in a battle between two nationally-ranked Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.
The win moved Redlands (15-2 overall, 7-1 in SCIAC), ranked No. 11 nationally by D3hoops.com, into a first place tie with ninth-ranked CMS (16-1, 7-1) and Occidental (14-3, 7-1).
“We fought through a lot… We got down in overtime and fought back. We made plays,” Redlands coach Eric Bridgeland said. “I’m so proud of them because they never stopped fighting. That’s a great, great win against a great, great team.”
Jhace Boston’s layup with 18 seconds left in overtime gave the Bulldogs a 79-78 lead. The Stags came down and had three contested layups or short jumpers in the final seconds with a chance to take a lead. Kennedy, who finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, then grabbed a rebound and was fouled with 0.4 seconds left.
After a long delay to verify the time remaining after the foul, Kennedy went to shoot the free throws at the end near the Redlands student section. He missed both and time ran out.
“Our crowd made him miss,” Bridgeland said. “They were super loud.”
The Stags entered the week ranked third in NCAA Division III in team free-throw percentage and had made 16 of their first 19 free throws before Kennedy’s misses. Kennedy made three of his seven free throws.
Both teams battled adversity in the game.
CMS trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, then rallied to take a 66-65 lead on a three-point play by Kennedy with 2:05 to play. Cam Brown answered with a 3-pointer with 1:38 left to give the Bulldogs a 68-66 lead.
Reid Jones, who scored a game-high 22 points but fouled out in the first minute of overtime, tied the score 68-68 on a layup with 1:21 to play. Neither team scored the rest of regulation with the Stags’ Will Householter (13 points) missing a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer.
CMS then led throughout overtime until Boston’s game-winning layup.
“I liked the way we came back down six (late in regulation). I’m excited about that. We just didn’t take care of the ball very good,” CMS coach Ken Scalmanini said. “Redlands has a great team. They’re very athletic, good off the dribble.”
Cahal Connolly added eight points and 15 rebounds for CMS, which outrebounded Redlands 48-36.
Redlands was led by Omari Ferguson, who scored 18 points, and Jake Hlywiak, who added 17. Boston scored 14 points. Lucas Gordon had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds but fouled out with 3:35 left in regulation.
The Stags’ loss ended their program-best 16-0 start. Scalmanini said he didn’t expect to go through the regular season undefeated.
“But I wish it was something I still had to worry about,” he said.
The teams play again Feb. 18 at CMS and possibly again in the SCIAC tournament.
