UK Deputy Ambassador Leaves Washington Amid Iran Security Leak Probe
James Roscoe, Britain’s deputy ambassador in Washington, has abruptly left his post after being questioned as part of an inquiry into leaked National Security Council discussions involving Iran.
Roscoe had been serving as the second most senior British diplomat in the United States and temporarily led the embassy after the removal of Peter Mandelson. The Foreign Office confirmed only that he had “left his post,” without providing further explanation.
His departure has intensified scrutiny around one of the most sensitive security breaches to hit the British government in recent years, after confidential discussions from a National Security Council meeting reportedly reached the media during a period of rising tension involving Iran and the United States.
The leaked material reportedly concerned internal discussions over potential US use of British military bases during operations involving Iran. Disclosure of the discussions triggered anger inside government because National Security Council meetings deal with intelligence, military planning and highly classified diplomatic coordination.
Deputy prime minister David Lammy previously described the leak as an “absolute travesty,” underlining the seriousness attached to the breach inside Whitehall. The Times first reported that Roscoe had faced questions as part of the inquiry.
Roscoe joined the British Embassy in Washington in 2022 and later became interim ambassador following Mandelson’s departure. During his time in the role, he helped oversee major diplomatic events including Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain and King Charles’s recent visit to the United States marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Before moving to Washington, Roscoe served as Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations and previously worked as communications chief to Queen Elizabeth II. He also held senior communications roles under former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
The departure lands at an especially difficult moment for Britain’s Washington embassy, which sits at the centre of intelligence sharing, defence cooperation and trade negotiations between London and Washington.
Questions Grow Inside Whitehall Over Iran Leak
Whitehall is under growing pressure after details from a closed National Security Council meeting appeared outside secure government channels.
The discussions reportedly involved Iran, military coordination and conversations linked to British support for the United States. National Security Council meetings are normally restricted to a small group of ministers, senior advisers and security officials because they can include classified intelligence and operational planning.
Roscoe’s departure has added to concerns surrounding Britain’s embassy in Washington, which plays a central role in intelligence cooperation and defence coordination between London and Washington.
