WALNUT — Summit boys water polo coach Nicholas Delgado purposefully scheduled tough opponents for his team this season.
“We played some Division 4 and Division 5 teams. It was a learning experience, but it helped this team get better,” Delgado said. “Those matches helped us win our league championship and then we kept that streak going all the way through these playoffs.”

Summit turned in other dominant performance at both ends of the pool during Saturday morning’s CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship match at the Mt. San Antonio College Aquatics Complex. Anthony Solorzano and Aden Hernandez combined to score 12 goals, and the SkyHawks kept Anaheim off the scoreboard for the first 22 minutes of the match.
That combination helped Summit cruise to a 13-3 win and capture the first section championship in program history.
“It took dedication and a lot of hard work,” Delgado said. “These boys gave everything they had to win this title.”
Summit (24-4) was the No. 1-seeded team for this year’s Division 6 playoffs and advanced to the championship match with a 16-2 victory over Patriot in the quarterfinals and a 22-4 win over Edgewood in the semifinals. The SkyHawks had another strong start Saturday morning, as Solorzano and Hernandez each scored twice in the first four minutes.
“Having a start like that was huge. It really helps us have the right state of mind for the match,” Solorzano said.
Anaheim (19-10) settled in defensively and held Summit scoreless for the next 7 1/2 minutes. However, the Colonists were unable to take advantage at the other end, as the SkyHawks’ defense killed off three power plays during the opening quarter.
Sean Christian, Summit’s senior goalkeeper, was an intimidating presence in the cage and finished the match with 17 blocks.
“He looked like he was 7 feet tall when I shook his hand,” one Anaheim player said about Christian, who actually is 6-foot-2.
Summit ended that scoring drought when Solorzano converted a 5-meter penalty shot midway through the second period, and he and Hernandez each added another goal to increase that lead to 7-0 at halftime. Solorzano scored four times in the second half and finished with seven goals. Hernandez scored twice after halftime to cap a five-goal performance.
Delgado also is the school’s swimming coach and attributed the championship run to his team’s overall conditioning.
“Transition is huge for us. Being able to make a stop and immediately turn that into offense is so important,” Delgado explained.
Hernandez is 1 of 12 seniors on the squad and said Saturday’s victory is something that group will long remember.
“When that final buzzer sounded it felt great to know we were champions,” Hernandez said. “This is my senior year, and it’s great to have done something that we will be remembered for. This is something we have been working for.”
Added Christian: “Honestly, it’s one of the best feelings of my life. Dominating the way we did and showing we were the best.”
Anaheim scored all three of its goals in the fourth quarter, with the first and last ones scored by Moises Alvarez.
