Six Inland girls volleyball teams begin quest for CIF State championships this week

The Murrieta Valley, Corona and Rialto girls volleyball teams made history last week by claiming a CIF Southern Section championship for the first time.

The focus now turns toward adding a CIF State championship trophy to the collection. Murrieta Valley, Corona and Rialto are among the six Inland teams competing in this year’s state playoffs, which start Tuesday night with regional openers. The CIF State office released division pairings Sunday afternoon.

Murrieta Valley earned the No. 3 seed in the Division I regional bracket after winning the Southern Section’s Division 2 championship Saturday afternoon. The Nighthawks (29-7) open at home Tuesday at 6 p.m., against Oaks Christian (24-10), which reached the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

Corona received the No. 5 seed for the Division III regional after claiming the Southern Section’s Division 5 championship Saturday. The Panthers (24-14) also open at home Tuesday at 6 p.m., with a match against Valencia (17-16), which advanced to the semifinal round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs.

Rialto earned the No. 9 seed in the Division V regional bracket after capturing the Southern Section’s Division 9 title Thursday night. The Knights (13-14) travel to Covina for a 6 p.m. match Tuesday against Charter Oak (18-16), which reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 8 playoffs.

Temecula Valley earned a spot in the state playoffs by virtue of being one of eight teams chosen to compete in the Southern Section’s Division 1 playoffs. The Golden Bears went 0-3 in pool play but still received the No. 2 seed in the Division I regional bracket. Temecula Valley (16-6) opens at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. against San Diego’s Academy of Our Lady of Peace (23-6), which was one of eight teams in the San Diego Section’s Open Division playoffs.

Temecula Valley is looking to win the program’s second CIF State title in seven years. The Golden Bears claimed the Division I championship in 2018.

Etiwanda qualified for the state playoffs by reaching the semifinals of the Southern Section’s Division 2 playoffs, and the Eagles received the No. 9 seed for the Division I regional playoffs. Etiwanda (30-3) heads to San Luis Obispo (29-7), a Central Section Division 1 semifinalist, for a 6 p.m. match Tuesday.

Rancho Cucamonga earned its spot by reaching the semifinals of the Southern Section’s Division 4 playoffs. The Cougars (21-18) are the No. 15 seed in the Division II regional and travel to Bakersfield on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match against Centennial (26-10), a Central Section Division 1 quarterfinalist.

Miller also qualified after reaching the semifinal round of the Southern Section’s Division 8 playoffs but appear to have opted out of the state playoffs.
