San Juan Capistrano City Council – Orange County Register

Two candidates have been vying for the San Juan Capistrano City Council seat representing District 1.

Incumbent Sergio Farias has been looking to hold off a challenge by Jesse “Chip” Nelson, a business owner.

In early ballot counting results Tuesday night after polls closed, Farias was significantly ahead of Nelson.

Issues highlighted during the fall campaign were a lack of parking for residents and visitors, the city’s financial security and maintaining the town’s open equestrian spaces, charm and historical significance.

Farias has deep roots in the community, and three generations of his family have lived in District 1, he said.

“I’m devoted to elevating the standard of living for all residents, regardless of their background or economic status,” he said during his campaign.

Nelson is the CEO of Empower Renewable Energy Development and has lived in town for 24 years.

“I’ll prioritize smart growth strategies to balance the need for progress with the preservation of our community’s unique historical identity,” he said during the campaign.

There are five members on the San Juan City Council. The city’s mayor is selected at the first meeting of each December to serve a one-year term.
