King football dominates Lakewood to begin playoffs – Press Enterprise
RIVERSIDE — Dominance was an understatement for King High as it crushed Lakewood, 35-6, in a CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoff opener on Friday night with an efficient offense and a defense that was stifling.
“It came down to our players making plays,” King head coach Jason McCains said. “It starts with Josh Harper, our quarterback, Blake Bowen, our receiver, our offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage real well … and you have to give it to our defense, they did a great job.”
Bowen, a sophomore receiver, had a strong all-around night with five catches for 77 yards, 28 rushing yards and two total touchdowns.
“He’s a special kid … it’s guys like that that make our lives easier,” McCains said.
Harper, another senior, finished with 226 passing yards and three touchdown passes and also ran for 34 yards with no turnovers.
“He’s our program … it’s like another coach on the field. He knows exactly what we want to do, he’s getting guys lined up and he knows who to get the ball to,” McCains said.
The King defense racked up six sacks and two interceptions, and the special teams blocked an extra-point attempt. Junior defensive lineman Andrew Dixon led the way with two sacks, and junior linebacker Kaleo Browne and senior defensive back Robert George each had an interception.
“We controlled up front, [Kade Casillas] moved around a lot and we just had to contain him and play good coverage,” McCains said. “I thought for four quarters we did that for the most part.”
King (7-4) started to take control in the second quarter. First, Bowen electrified the crowd with a one-handed 17-yard touchdown catch. Minutes later, Browne was able to intercept a deflected Casillas pass. With 32 seconds left in the second quarter, Harper was able to find Browne in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown and a 14-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore tight end Caleb Tafua led the way for Lakewood (5-6), finishing with three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Casillas connected with Tafua for a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Casillas finished with 99 passing yards and 38 rushing yards but also threw two interceptions.
King will travel to face Salesian (10-1) in a second-round game next week.
