It’s time for serious oversight over the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department – Press Enterprise

I have always believed law enforcement has an honorable duty to serve and protect. That duty also comes with a responsibility to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Recent actions by the scandal-plagued Riverside County Sheriff’s Department violate that duty and weaken our community’s trust.

I am running for Riverside County Supervisor to restore that trust and deliver quality services for hardworking families.

As a member of the State Assembly, I helped pass Assembly Bill 1185, authorizing each county in the State of California to create Sheriff Oversight Boards. The bill, now law, gives the county oversight boards the necessary subpoena power they need, which is enforceable by Superior Court action. This bill was tailor-made for our community’s residents facing unacceptable conduct by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

There has been a record number of in-custody deaths in the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department that have gone unaddressed, lacking the proper accountability and transparency. We have seen the horrific classroom restraint and handcuffing of an 11-year-old Black student with a disability.

Recent news stories have also reported Riverside County Sheriff deputies’ involvement in illegal drug possession and the trafficking and sexual extortion of females in custody. Despite this, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors has yet to follow other counties’ lead by authorizing long overdue and necessary oversight.

Why has the Riverside County Board of Supervisors failed to act to implement Assembly Bill 1185 and create a Sheriff Oversight Board? One answer may be the Riverside Sheriffs’ Association’s undue influence. The Riverside Sheriffs’ Association has donated and continues to donate thousands of dollars to the political campaigns of county supervisors. The Sheriffs’ Association also supports my opponent, Richard Roth. I have not asked and refuse to accept the support of the Sheriffs’ Association.

I was proud to stand with families and community leaders to call on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to take immediate action to address the harm committed by the fatally dysfunctional Sheriff’s Department.

As county supervisor, I will focus on accountability for the Sheriff’s Department. I will vote to establish an independent oversight body with subpoena power and an Office of Inspector General to enable greater transparency and accountability from the Sheriff’s Department by the community. Finally, I will take immediate steps to separate the offices of the Sheriff and Coroner.

We need the Riverside Board of Supervisors to do the right thing and stand up to the Riverside Sheriffs’ Association. As county supervisor, I will call on my colleagues to help restore the trust Riverside County deserves in those who have a duty to serve and protect us.
