FBI Investigates ‘Torture Warehouse’ Allegedly Operated by Baton Rouge PD

Baton Rouge police are being investigated by the FBI for allegedly operating a “torture warehouse” where they detained, abused and humiliated detainees, Livia Albeck-Ripka reports for the New York Times. The investigation comes after a lawsuit was filed last week by Ternell L. Brown, a grandmother who was detained and forcibly transported to the warehouse for mixing two different prescription pills in the same container.

Brown alleges that, once at the warehouse, she was stripped, cavity searched, and held there for more than two hours before being released without being charged. Brown also alleges that the officers switched off their body cameras and searched her without a warrant, probable cause or consent. The warehouse, known as the Brave Cave, is run by the Street Crimes Unit of the Baton Rouge Police Department and was recently closed after allegations similar to Brown’s were raised by others. The FBI opened a civil rights investigation, saying it was based on “allegations that members of the department may have abused their authority.”
