Arlington football rallies past Riverside Poly – Press Enterprise
RIVERSIDE — Senior Adrian Mendoza could have attended Riverside Poly but chose Arlington for football.
“I was supposed to go to Poly coming out of middle school but then COVID happened and I ended up here, and it’s great to finally beat Poly my senior year,” Mendoza said after helping Arlington defeat Poly for the first time since 2017.
Mendoza hauled in the game-winning 14-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter as Arlington beat Poly, 13-6, in a nonleague game on Friday night.
“Adrian has been a game-changer since Day 1 three years ago,” Arlington coach Kevin Argumosa said. “We can put him at any position we need to and he’s going to shine.”
Mendoza finished with three catches for 66 yards as Arlington (1-1 overall) cleaned up the mistakes from its season opener to earn an emotional victory.
“It feels amazing, especially against Poly,” Mendoza said. “We’ve lost to them the last two years but we came out with a bang today.”
Sophomore quarterback Anthony Avina completed 12 of 23 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns for Arlington.
Senior tailback Jshaun Thomas had 10 carries for a game-high 86 rushing yards for Poly (1-1), which was stymied by turnovers and critical penalties.
“The team that played the best won tonight. It’s as simple as that,” first-year Poly coach Jerron Gilbert said.
The Bears made big plays on fourth down to topple Hillcrest in Week 0, but junior quarterback Victor Aquilar finished just 7 of 15 with an interception against Arlington.
“He struggled tonight, but it’s not all on him,” Gilbert said. “We played a dirty game.”
Arlington got in the end zone when Avina hit sophomore running back Daniel Regalado in the flat for a 6-0 lead.
The Lions burned nearly seven minutes off the game clock with a lengthy second-quarter drive to keep the ball away from Poly, but the Bears grabbed the lead with less than one minute left in the third quarter on an 11-yard sweep by senior Johnny Monforte.
The teams traded possessions in the fourth quarter until Avina and Mendoza connected on back-to-back plays to give Arlington the win.
