Rare double eagle gold coin heads to auction
Stack’s Bowers Galleries in Costa Mesa will auction a rare, “almost uncirculated” gold coin on Nov. 19.
The $20 double eagle gold piece, minted in Nevada in the late-1800s, is a coin Stack’s Bowers calls “the finest graded known to exist.” It’s the centerpiece of a Rarities Night Auction later this month and part of the Bernard Richards Collection.
Richards, who died in 2015, was a construction executive at Slattery Associates in New York. He collected coins throughout his life, but his family was unaware of its volume or value until his three daughters found it after their mother, Arlene, died in 2020. The coin collection was stashed in two safe deposit boxes stored for more than 40 years in a vault at a Manhattan Citibank on Park Avenue.
The double eagle gold coin weighs nearly an ounce and was minted in 1870 in Carson, Nevada, part of a small batch of coins produced, Stack’s says. One of 3,789 pieces minted, coin experts believe just 35 to 65 exist today and none are in “mint state.”
The “fresh to the market” AU-55 coin (a term that means almost uncirculated) was last sold at an auction in 1986. Stack’s expects the coin will draw a record price between $1.5 million and $2 million.
For more details, go to Stack’s Bowers Galleries at auctions.stacksbowers.com. The auction will be held Nov. 18-22 in Costa Mesa with lot viewing beforehand Nov. 12-15 at the Whitman Winter Expo.

Adopt a family holiday program seeks donors
MOMS, a Santa Ana-based nonprofit dedicated to help new mothers in Orange County, is seeking community support for its annual Adopt-a-Family holiday program.
The organization says requests are at “an all-time high,” as it looks to provide families with a little cheer over the holidays.
The program to adopt a local family is available through mid-November. Individuals, companies and families can adopt families who need help this holiday season.
Donors first read through family profiles, specific one to adopt and then provide a contribution. Gift cards are provided to families to purchase gifts and necessities such as food, clothing and household items.
MOMS says its maternal-child health workers and health educators choose the families who are the those most in need. Every family includes expectant or brand-new parents, and many have single mothers facing housing insecurity, MOMS organizers tell us.
MOMS hopes to serve 130 families this holiday season. This campaign is underwritten by US Bank, and the deadline to adopt a family is Nov. 15.
To participate, go to roonga.com/moms2024 or contact by email Tracy Foye at tfoye@momsorangecounty.org. For more information about the nonprofit, go to momsorangecounty.org for details about MOMS.
