Beaumont football teams cruises past Redlands, secures outright Citrus Belt League title
BEAUMONT — Beaumont joined the Citrus Belt League in 2020, and that news boosted football coach Jeff Steinberg.
“I was super excited,” Steinberg said. “It was so good for our school and our program.”
Thursday night, Beaumont completed a perfect league campaign with a 51-17 victory over Redlands. The Beaumont supporters were confident of the results, as they had printed caps and T-shirts celebrating the program’s first CBL title.
Beaumont (9-1 overall, 5-0 in league) has won six consecutive games and will open the CIF Southern Section playoffs next week.
Redlands (4-6, 0-5) has lost five straight games.
Junior quarterback Jeremiah Duhu led the potent Cougars’ offense with his running and passing. Duhu had three touchdown passes and ran for two more. He gained 131 yards on 12 carries. Trashawn James-Reek added two more rushing touchdowns for the Cougars
“I want to have a big impact and do whatever needs to be done for the team,” Duhu said. “I thought we would be good in the spring. There was a lot of team chemistry.”
Beaumont was 8-3 last season. The Cougars’ only loss this season was to Oak Hills, but that game wasn’t on the schedule at the start of the season. Beaumont was supposed to host Dixie High school from Utah. The teams faced each other last year, but Dixie canceled the game because of the Line fire.
“We were looking for a game and Oak Hills was looking for a game, so it was a good match,” Steinberg said.
Although Beaumont lost to Oak Hills by a 28-19 score, the defeat helped boost Beaumont’s confidence.
“The loss was good for us, because we showed we could play with them.”
Beaumont started the scoring when Duhu tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Breadon Miller on its first drive. Teddy McGee evened the score for Redlands with a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter.
Duhu ran for a 5-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. James-Reek added an 18-yard running touchdown less than 2 minutes later, staking Beaumont to a 21-7 advantage.
“I worked on developing leadership skills and strengthening my physical and mental ability,” Duhu said.
Steinberg said Duhu came in on Sundays and spent extra time with the receiving corps.
“I want to play all six weeks in the playoffs.”
Cleve Johnson, who is a receiver and a special teams player, received the Rock Award, which is given to a player who plays an important role in the game. The senior praised his teammates for making the award possible.
“It starts with the offensive line and my teammates get me the ball,” Johnson said. “I wanted to have a special senior season and go out on a good note.”
