Riverside teen meets Kansas City Chiefs tight end Noah Gray – Press Enterprise
A Riverside teenager who plays football got to meet an NFL player who, like him, lives with type 1 diabetes.
Shiloh Wilmoth, 14, traveled to Las Vegas to sit down with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Noah Gray, get an autograph and pose for photos.
The Sunday, Nov. 26, meetup marked Shiloh’s 10-year anniversary of learning he was diabetic and celebrated National Diabetes Awareness Month.
It was arranged by the nonprofit Beyond Type 1 and Gvoke HypoPen, a glucagon pen used by diabetics in case of very low blood sugar.
Shiloh, who plays quarterback, has faced concerns about what might happen should he experience hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, a news release states. Though this led to his benching, the release states, Shiloh’s confidence in playing and pursuing his dream of becoming a pro athlete has been reignited by meeting with Gray.
“Talking about lows is super important because diabetes is life or death for us — that’s just the reality of it,” Gray told Shiloh, according to the release. “…The severe low blood sugar events are the scariest because they can hit you very quickly, and you can be in a crowd of people or by yourself. It’s super important to have that conversation with a classmate you’re sitting next to all year long, or maybe the three teammates you’re closest to … because having that support system is life-saving.”
Shiloh also got to watch the Chiefs play the Las Vegas Raiders — the first NFL game he’s attended.
Gray was diagnosed in January 2018 while a freshman at Duke University, after experiencing weight loss, frequent urination and blurred vision, the release states.
