Redlands’ Lincoln Memorial Shrine will celebrate 160th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address – Press Enterprise

In celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, Redlands’ Lincoln Memorial Shrine will host an event 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, in Smiley Park, outside the shrine.

The celebration will feature music by the Mountain Fifes and Drums and Camp Carleton Band and an artillery demonstration by the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, according to a news release. There will also be a presentation of the Gettysburg Address by local children.

President Abraham Lincoln presented his Gettysburg Address Nov. 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pa. The speech came at a significant period in the Civil War and is considered to be one of the greatest speeches in U.S. history.

“While we have hosted commemorative programs for the Gettysburg Address in the past, we felt it was important to honor this anniversary in a special way,” Maria Carrillo Colato, special collections manager for the A.K. Smiley Public Library, said in the news release. “We are excited about partnering with the community to celebrate Lincoln’s words and legacy.”

The event is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Contemporary Club of A.K. Smiley Public Library, 173 S. Eureka St.

The Lincoln Memorial Shrine is in Smiley Park behind the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St.
