Santa Margarita girls golf aiming for ‘repeat’ at state after winning CIF SoCal Regional title – Orange County Register

They defended their CIF-SCGA SoCal Regional title. Now, they’ll try to defend their state championship.

That will be the challenge for Santa Margarita’s girls golf team on Wednesday at Pebble Beach as it competes in the CIF State championships on the Poppy Hills Golf Course.

The Eagles, who won their first state title last season in San Gabriel, will be the lone Orange County team at the event, leading a SoCal trio of Walnut and Torrey Pines. NorCal champion Granite Bay paces the three entries from Northern California.

“There will be a lot of great golf,” Santa Margarita coach Jill Hegna said Monday night from Pebble Beach. “Our Eagles are hungry for a repeat.”

Santa Margarita and the rest of the field could face another obstacle in the weather. The late Wednesday afternoon forecast calls for a 35 percent chance of rain.

Santa Margarita has delivered a dominant postseason.

Last week, the Eagles outdistanced runner-up Walnut by 12 strokes at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills to claim their second consecutive CIF-SCGA SoCal Regional title.

Santa Margarita carded a 6-under-par 364 en route to its third title of the postseason.

Freshman Donina Zhou of the Eagles won a one-hole playoff to take the SoCal individual title with a 5-under-par 69.

Stanford-bound Leigh Chien also broke par with a 71 to tie for third. Freshman Emily Song shot at even-par 74 to tie for 20th.

Northwood finished fifth at 392.

Orange County had three individuals — not on a qualifying team — advance to state. They were Yurang Li of Sunny Hills (71), Lauren Lee of Mater Dei (72) and Lauren Shin of Los Alamitos (72), who tied for third and eighth, respectively.

Santa Margarita is seeking to sweep the postseason tournaments. The Eagles earlier won the CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF-SCGA qualifying tournaments.
